Netflix has shared a first image of Cillian Murphy taking on the role of Tommy Shelby in the upcoming episode Peaky Blinders Film.

The film is a direct continuation of the series and takes place a few years after the events of the sixth season finale, i.e. after the Shelbys in World War II. The streamer confirmed that production on the film has begun and also gave fans a first look at the protagonist.

In the newly released images, Murphy stands in profile in front of a brick wall and has grayer hair as Tommy. A second snapshot sees this Oppenheimer Star poses on set with series creator Steven Knight, who also wrote and produced the film.

“By Order of the Peaky Blinders…Tommy Shelby is back,” Netflix captioned the post. “Cillian Murphy and Steven Knight are reunited on set as production officially begins on the upcoming Netflix film.”

It was announced that Marvel’s Tim Roth will be joining Murphy, with previously announced stars Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan rounding out the ensemble. Additional cast members are also expected to be announced in due course.

Given the theater of war, the film could draw on Tommy Shelby’s traumatic past as a sergeant major in World War I, which left him with nightmares and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is unclear whether Tommy will be directly involved in the conflict.
