The MLB playoff round is set as Braves beat the Mets to clinch the final NL wild card spot

The MLB playoff round is set as the Atlanta Braves become the final team to clinch a National League Wild Card spot after defeating the New York Mets 3-0 in the second game of their doubleheader on Monday.

The Mets had already secured their spot in the NL Wild Card when they won a thrilling first game against the Braves thanks to a two-run home run by Francisco Lindor in the top of the ninth inning.

But the theatrics were absent in this game as the Mets didn’t field their best lineup to keep players fit for Game 1 of their Wild Card matchup on Tuesday. And their NL East opponent, the Braves, didn’t complain because they got the runs they needed to punch their postseason ticket.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, however, were not fans of Monday’s second game result in Atlanta, as they relied on one team to beat the other to clinch the final Wild Card spot. So there will be a new National League pennant winner this year after the D-Backs won it last season.

Atlanta got into the game early when Gio Urshela hit a flare single in the bottom of the second inning to score Jorge Soler.

That one run was the only difference until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Marcel Ozuna belted a single into left field that scored Sean Murphy and Ozzie Albies to extend the Braves’ lead.

Meanwhile, the Mets had trouble hitting Grant Holmes, who went much further than manager Brian Snitker expected. He finished the game with four innings and just one hit while striking out seven.

The Braves unloaded their pitching staff to ensure the Mets didn’t get routed, and it worked as Atlanta only gave up three total hits in the win.

Now the Braves travel to San Diego to face the Padres in the best-of-three wild card series, while the Mets face the Milwaukee Brewers.

And while Atlanta obviously loves being able to compete for a World Series title, they are expected to be missing a crucial arm.

Snitker told reporters that star Chris Sale was not expected to start in the series with San Diego after he suffered an injury in his regular start Monday due to back spasms.

The Braves were expected to save Sale for the second game of the doubleheader if they lost to the Mets on Monday, but he developed back spasms that kept him from playing. Sale has been on the rise this season, posting a 2.38 ERA over 177.2 innings, so he will certainly be missed.
