49ers’ Kyle Shanahan speaks to Christian McCaffrey, who is suffering from Achilles tendonitis in both legs

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters on a conference call Monday and addressed the recent news that running back Christian McCaffrey is suffering from bilateral Achilles tendonitis.

“He has bilateral Achilles tendonitis, so Achilles tendonitis in both legs,” Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area explained on his podcast.

Shanahan clarified that this is not a new development.

“Over time, he did both,” Shanahan explained. “I think it started with one person. One can overcompensate for it, moved on to the other. But mostly one of them just bothered him. But he had it in both cases.”

McCaffrey recently traveled to Germany to treat his Achilles tendonitis. However, Shanahan remained tight-lipped about the details, and Monday’s call was no different.

When asked if he had spoken to McCaffrey about how he was feeling after the treatment, Shanahan simply replied, “No, I haven’t.”

Previously, Shanahan mentioned that the 49ers plan to ramp up McCaffrey’s rehab this week, starting as early as Monday, to assess his recovery progress.

McCaffrey, the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year, has been on injured reserve since Sept. 14 and has not played yet this season. Although he will be eligible to return prior to the 49ers’ Week 6 game against the Seattle Seahawks, it remains uncertain when he will be ready to take the field again.
