Aaron Rodgers and head coach Robert Saleh appeared to have different opinions when it came to hard cadence counting, and that led to a handful of false start penalties on Sunday.

The Jets lost to the Denver Broncos 10-9 after it looked like New York was starting to click. Rodgers was 24 of 42 with 225 passing yards and had a QB rating of 31.8. He was sacked five times and the team failed to reach the end zone.

“We have to find out if we are good enough or ready to handle the full cadence,” Saleh said after the game on SNY TV. “Cadence was not a problem throughout the camp. We felt like our business was doing pretty well. Obviously I took a big step back today.”

Rodgers disagreed.

“That’s a possibility,” Rodgers said. “The other option is to hold them accountable. I mean, we didn’t have a problem. We had a false start. Morgan.” [Moses] I think I had a false start up until then.

“It was a weapon. We use them in practice every day. We rarely have a false start. And having five today… Yeah, that seems like an outlier. I don’t know if we need to make mass changes based on the nature of an outlier game.”

Saleh appeared to back off from his comments after the game.

“We will always push the limits in terms of speed. Always,” he told reporters on ESPN on Monday. “But as far as operations, getting in and out of the huddle, getting to the line of attack, the communication that’s taking place, those are all things that we can continue to look at and clean up.”

“But as far as cadence goes, that’s part of what makes us who we are, and we’re going to continue to push the envelope with that.”

One of the hallmarks of Rodgers’ career was his ability to lure defenders offside and score so-called “free plays”.
