This action-packed thriller series just made Netflix's top 10

Netflix, one of the best streaming services around, keeps its top 10 list up to date with constant additions of exciting content. Lately this list has been dominated by the new No. 1 romantic comedy Nobody Wants This and the controversial series Monsters, but an adrenaline-pumping thriller has decided to make a stealthy appearance. “Gyeongseong Creature” secured the No. 9 spot following the release of its highly anticipated second season on September 27.

With a large fan base, this Korean thriller takes you into a world full of monstrous creatures and political intrigue set against the dark backdrop of 1940s Gyeongseong. Best of all, Season 2 is finally streaming, giving viewers even more drama and excitement this week.

But is this show really worth watching? Here’s what you need to know about Gyeongseong Creature on Netflix…

“Gyeongseong Creature” is a dark historical thriller set in the spring of 1945 during the Japanese occupation of Korea. Set in Gyeongseong (the colonial-era name of Seoul), the story revolves around a group of individuals trying to survive amidst political unrest and a mysterious, monstrous threat.

The plot revolves around Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-joon), a wealthy and resourceful man who finds himself in a dangerous situation involving missing people and a terrifying creature lurking in the city. Tae-sang teams up with Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee), an experienced bounty hunter who has experience tracking down missing people even in dangerous circumstances. Together they must learn the truth about Gyeongseong and confront a terrible force that threatens humanity.

“Gyeongseong Creature” is an exciting watch

The chemistry between Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee is one of the things that makes “Gyeongseong Creature” so exciting to watch. Their dynamic as Jang Tae-sang and Yoon Chae-ok is intense, with both actors delivering powerful performances that truly captivate you feel the tension between their characters (so yes, this show is partly romantic too). Whether they’re engaged in fierce battles or sharing quieter, more emotional moments, the on-screen connection between the two is electric. This relationship helps break up the otherwise horror-driven story.

Of course, I have to mention the action sequences, which are a big part of this show. You can tell that the actors put their heart and soul into making these scenes as realistic as possible. I’m not usually a fan of chaotic fights and big explosions, but “Gyeongseong Creature” manages to do it in a way that makes the characters even better.

Jang Tae-sang is a real powerhouse in combat, using his wits and strength to outmaneuver and defeat enemies, while Yoon Chae-ok brings a courageous, decisive touch to the fight. Every dangerous situation only increases the chemistry between them even more, and that’s one of the reasons I binged the entire show in just a few days.

However, the show is not without its flaws. CGI may be missing in certain scenes, especially in action-packed moments where visual effects are heavily relied upon. The creature designs, while ambitious (and frightening), occasionally fail due to poor CGI. But if you can look past these minor setbacks, “Gyeongseong Creature” is definitely worth watching.

Critics also agree that this show is a thrill ride considering the first season is 92% up Rotten tomatoes. Geordie Gray by The Australian said: “There’s a lot to see, and the human drama is much more compelling than the scary stuff. However, if you’re looking for entertainment, this show has plenty to offer.” Meanwhile, Inverse Lyvie Scott explained: “Gyeongseong Creature weaves together elements of romance, horror and political intrigue in its historical remix. And while all of these themes aren’t perfectly balanced, it’s still an addictive series.”

Season 2 also seems to be popular with viewers. Without going into spoiler territory, online reviews are a bit mixed (most reviews mention that it doesn’t live up to the first season). However, Kayti Burt focuses on the positive Time magazine said that Season 2 “focuses heavily on the characters and what has changed for them since the last time.”

Director Chung Dong-yoon also spoke to the same publication about the changes he made: “Some people told me that some parts in Season 1 were very slow. I wanted to make it more immersive. So if there were parts that were a little slow, I would try to make it faster.

If you haven’t started watching Gyeongseong Creature yet, now is the perfect time to dive in. With two seasons available on Netflix, it’s a binge-worthy series full of gripping action, intense character dynamics, and a plot that will keep you hooked. Although the CGI sometimes falters, the narrative and chemistry between the leads more than make up for it in this outstanding thriller.
