Scholes wonders why ‘dead’ Man Utd signed £43m man after Spurs defeat: ‘Give us something’

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes is unsure why the Red Devils signed Matthijs de Ligt in the summer transfer window and insists they looked “like an untrained football team” in the 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham.

Spurs only needed three minutes to take the lead through Brennan Johnson Man Utd The only surprise was that they didn’t score more than second-half goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke after Bruno Fernandes saw red late in the first period.

The second 3-0 home defeat in a row left Man Utd in 12th place with seven points from six games after scoring just five goals, and the pressure is already mounting again on Erik ten Hag after surviving a summer scrutiny from the club’s hierarchy.

And former Man Utd midfielder Scholes is still baffled by the lack of a plan under Ten Hag as the Red Devils look “dead” and “untrained” against Tottenham.

I’ll keep talking Super SportScholes said: “They don’t know how they’re going to play.

“You don’t know how they will approach the games, whether they will counterattack or sit deep or whether they will try to have all the possession in the game. We have no idea. They look like a football team without a coach.

“It’s been two and a bit years now… from the first week Ange Postecoglou came in we probably knew what Tottenham were doing and they still do it to this day.”

“We are still two years in the future [at United] and as I said, it is an untrained team.

“The players looked dead today, they looked flat, they looked ‘I don’t know what to do’, there is no enthusiasm for football and that can only come from the training ground.”

“Some of the positions that people take on the pitch are sometimes just crazy.”

De Ligt joined Man Utd from Bayern Munich for around £43million in the summer transfer window, but Scholes has questioned why the Red Devils spent so much money on the centre-back.

Scholes added: “When you bring players in you expect them to be much better than the ones you already have. I don’t see any players making a big difference.

“De Ligt came on for Maguire, for example, but there’s not a big difference.”

Asked if De Ligt was an improvement over Harry Maguire, Scholes replied: “No, absolutely not.”

Despite Ten Hag taking most of the blame for their performances, Scholes believes Man Utd’s experienced players need to step up and prove their worth.

Scholes continued: “These are experienced players for whom United paid a lot of money. We have to stop listening to excuses, get on the training pitch and find a way of playing.

“Find something, give us something!”
