Ipswich 2-2 Aston Villa: Morgan Rogers is rewarded with the club’s first goal of the season

England interim coach Lee Carsley will name his squad for the Nations League games against Greece and Finland in October on Thursday and many will be checking that list to see if Morgan Rogers’ name is included.

The 22-year-old’s form has been one of the biggest positives for Aston Villa over the first six weeks of the season and he was rewarded with his first club goal of the season in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Ipswich.

There was a degree of luck in the way he gained possession, but Rogers showed composure to control Jacob Greaves’ poor defensive attempts and then exchange passes with Ollie Watkins before finishing emphatically in the corner.

His exceptional ability to carry the ball was also demonstrated in a second half run when a number of Ipswich tacklers tried in vain to dispossess him.

Carsley has a wealth of attacking options to choose from, but on current form, Rogers could become increasingly difficult to ignore.
