Trump campaign rejects ‘SNL’ sketch about assassination attempts: ‘Disgusting’

The Trump campaign’s social media account faced pushback on Saturday Night Live (SNL) after the season premiere featured a skit about assassination attempts against former President Trump.

James Austin Johnson played Trump openly, referencing the first assassination attempt on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania, as he portrayed the former president at one of his rallies.

“Where the hell is everyone going?” Where are you going? I see you trying to leave but the doors are locked. Come back – we’ll have fun. We love my rallies, except when someone goes bing “Bing, bing, bing,” Johnson said.

The Trump campaign posted on social media: “There have been two assassination attempts against President Trump within seven weeks. @nbcsnl apparently thinks this is funny. Disgusting.”

“SNL” also referenced the assassination attempts in the “Weekend Update” segment, in which Colin Jost joked that he was “starting to worry that the bullet hit a little more than just the ear” after playing a clip in which Trump claimed to have a better “body” than President Biden at a recent rally.

Jost brought it up again later, referencing former First Lady Melania Trump’s recent interview.

“Speaking of which: Melania Trump gave a rare television interview this week in which she blamed Democrats for creating conditions that led to Trump’s assassination attempts, which is ridiculous. “If the Democrats want to eliminate a presidential candidate, they get the job done,” Jost said.

Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt on him at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. A bullet grazed the president’s ear and the gunman killed 50-year-old Corey Comperatore – a husband, father and former fire chief with the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Department. The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, also critically injured two other participants in the rally.

On September 15, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested after he allegedly pushed the muzzle of an AK-47 through the chain-link fence outside where Trump was golfing in Florida.

Routh reportedly fled the golf course after being shot by Secret Service agents and was eventually arrested in neighboring Martin County.
